Watch out for the Sun with Chaise Lounge Cushions

It might sound a bit strange, but one of the worst things you can do to your patio and chaise lounge cushions is leave them out in the sun. You may think that sunny days are the very reason that you have them, but the sun’s rays are one of the most damaging things for your cushions. Yet it’s easy to forget about your cushions and leave them outside in the baking sun even when you are not using them.

Here are a few easy steps you can take to keep your patio furniture cushions in the best possible condition.

1. Cover Them Up

It sounds simple but covering your outdoor cushions while you are using them immediately shades them from the sunlight that will fade their color. There’s nothing more annoying than buying your perfect patio cushion for a fair sum of money and then seeing its bright red beauty turn into a half hearted pink shade. Whenever your cushions are not in use for a reasonable period of time, cover them up. A simple throw or towel will do the trick, if you can’t be bothered to store them away.

2. Opt for Polyester Material

This material is rot, fade and stain resistant. Cotton might feel better but the durability of polyester means it can take the harsh conditions of outdoor life. In softer fabrics the sun can cause rips and tears as it slowly affects the fabric over a period of time. Sunbrella patio cushions have been made in special fabric designed to withstand all the elements that are thrown at patio cushions so you may want to invest in some of those.

3. Apply Some Shade

To prevent sun damage to you and your cushions, use a canopy or umbrella and stand to provide some necessary shade and relief from the sun.

4. Buy a Storage Bag

You can buy a special storage bag for chaise lounge cushions which will store up to four cushions out of the elements. This makes it easy to put them away until they are actually needed rather than leaving them to fade on your furniture.

At the end of the day caring for your chaise lounge cushions doesn’t involve any effort other than choosing carefully in the first place and avoiding too much exposure to the sun. Prevention is better than a cure. So make sure the cushions are not exposed too much. Letting your patio chair cushions sit in the sun for a limited period of time is fine but leaving them exposed for a prolonged period of time will certainly damage the fabric’s texture and color.
