Large Ponds Can Serve Many Purposes

For some people they may be considered small lakes, but for most, they are large ponds and can be considered for a wide variety of purposes. Fishing, swimming and even floating in a small boat or on a raft can make large ponds a personal recreation area. However, when considering large ponds for personal use several precautions will need to be take to prevent serious illness, injury or even drowning.

Many times there are reports of small children being harmed in large ponds on their parent’s or a neighbor’s property. Care must be taken to insure the safety of everyone who has even limited access to the water and making sure the water is not contaminated to keep those who choose to enter it healthy. To do this, many may be tempted to add chlorine to the water, but this will have a harmful effect on any living organisms in the water and should never be done with a natural pond.

Some find that large ponds are a natural source of water for irrigation for gardens and flowers, especially when considering the cost of water from a public utility or the strain it can place on private water wells. Pumping water from ponds can be done with an electric pump or one that runs on gasoline to help vegetation growth and the nutrients in the water will be more beneficial than water from municipal supply.

Private Ponds Can Benefit Property Appearance

For large ponds on which a boat will not fit, creating a special environment to surround with plant life and other natural objects can greatly enhance the appearance of the property. With aquatic plants sticking up through the water along the edge of the water and strategically placed rocks to provide occasional seating, or even a path through the shallow end of the pond, it can become a focal point of the landscaping.

If one end of the pond has a narrow point, perhaps a small wooden bridge can be built to further enhance the appearance. With large ponds the opportunities for improvements are limited only by the imagination of the homeowner and their budget for exterior living space.

However, just like small ones, large ponds are going to take some effort to keep clean and in good condition. By putting in the time and effort, large ponds can help beautify the landscape in essentially any surrounding. Providing waterfalls or fountains can also provide a place for relaxation in a hectic lifestyle.
